Creating a LibGuide

This guide will help you design an accessible, user-friendly LibGuide.

Content Box Types

There are four different content box types to choose from in LibGuides. Each of the options are outlined in the sections below, followed by examples further down the page.

Standard

In a standard content box you can include a variety of elements from HTML text, images, widgets, polls and more. Please note that any links created in a rich text editor will not be included in the link checker results or link statistics.

When using standard content boxes -

  • Reformat any text copied and pasted from other sources or platforms
  • Use headings if content is lengthy

Tabbed

Tabbed boxes control the amount of scrolling a user must do to browse content by grouping items together. This can be a useful option when listing resources by type.

When using tabbed content boxes -

  • Limit the number of tabs
  • Keep tab names short and concise

Gallery

Gallery boxes allow you to insert slides that rotate similar to a PowerPoint presentation.

When using gallery content boxes -

  • All images should include alt text unless you include captions
  • Slides should not be set to play automatically

Profile

Profile boxes include key contact information for subject specialists and liaisons.

When using profile content boxes -

  • Include a professional headshot or photo of the library when anyone can be contacted for further information
  • Profile boxes should be consistently located on the left side of the page, under the guide navigation menu

Example - Standard Box

A standard box is a good choice for a variety of content. It can be used to introduce the content of a guide, explain a topic in detail, or provide a list of resources to items to know.

For example, you might need to include a list of items that might be necessary for a lab such as:

  • Goggles
  • Close-toed shoes
  • Lab report

Bernese Mountain Dog

Big, powerful, and built for hard work, the Bernese Mountain Dog is also strikingly beautiful and blessed with a sweet, affectionate nature. Berners are generally placid but are always up for a romp with the owner, whom they live to please.

dalmatian dog

Dalmatian

The dignified Dalmatian, dogdom's citizen of the world, is famed for his spotted coat and unique job description. During their long history, these "coach dogs" have accompanied the horse-drawn rigs of nobles, travelers, and firefighters.
