Description

Visualizing Textual Patterns and Analysis with VOSviewer

This workshop introduces graduate students to VOSviewer, a software tool designed for creating maps based on network data, particularly bibliometric and textual data. VOSviewer is widely used for visualizing relationships, trends, and clusters within large sets of academic literature, including research articles, conference papers, and citation data. The workshop will focus on the use of VOSviewer to perform text mining, analyze co-occurrence of terms, and visualize textual patterns in academic and scientific literature.

Participants will learn how to use VOSviewer to create co-authorship networks, term co-occurrence maps, and citation-based networks. They will also explore how to apply these techniques to their research areas, making it easier to identify key trends, influential authors, and emerging topics within a field.

Workshop Objectives:
Introduce students to the functionality and features of VOSviewer for visualizing bibliometric and textual data.
Demonstrate the use of VOSviewer to analyze co-occurrence of terms, citations, and authorship networks in academic literature.
Provide hands-on training in importing and cleaning textual data for VOSviewer analysis.
Teach students how to interpret and present the visualizations generated from bibliometric and textual analysis.
Enable students to apply VOSviewer to their own research projects, helping them discover trends and relationships in large textual datasets.

Expected Benefits to Students:
Bibliometric Analysis Skills: Students will learn how to analyze academic literature and identify influential trends, authors, and topics in their research fields.
Text Mining Proficiency: Students will gain hands-on experience in extracting patterns from textual data and creating visual representations of these patterns.
Network Analysis: The workshop will provide students with skills to visualize networks of citations, co-authorships, and term relationships in academic papers, helping them better understand the dynamics of scholarly communication.
Enhanced Research: By using VOSviewer, students will be able to enrich their research with data-driven insights from large corpora of academic literature, enhancing their literature reviews and thematic analyses.
Data Presentation Skills: Students will learn how to present complex textual patterns and network relationships clearly through visualizations.
