ORCiD FAQS

Is ORCID free?

Yes, ORCiD is entirely free to researchers and all users

What if I already have an ORCiD ID but I forgot my number?

No problem search for your name from the ORCiD homepage, click on your profile, and sign in with the number on the profile.

I set up my account, but I haven't gotten a verification email, what do I do?

First check your spam and junk mail, often it will be directed there if you are new to ORCID. If its not there you can request another email from the sign in page

Can I download my ORCiD data?

Yes, you can! Simply login to ORCiD, click on account settings, and then select "download all my data"

What are the RINGGOLD and ROR numbers?

Ringgold is a former partner of ORCiD which used to apply unique institutional identifiers to profiles, ROR (Research Institution Registry) numbers are applied to your profile once you have affiliated your account with Purdue.

Can I download my ORCiD Data?

Yes, you can and its really easy! All you have to do is login, go to account settings, scroll down and click "download my data".

Is there more Metadata available?

Unfortunately, no. ORCiD states that they "want to keep things simple" and therefore they don't provide more metadata. There is a field in the Dublin Core however that allows for ORCiD numbers.

When will I use my ORCiD?

Whenever you apply for a grant or submit a publication. You can also add it to your website, CV, or any other place you list your research.

My ID ends in an X, is it still valid?

An X in your records is a "checksum" which just means that it is a value of 10, in other words the last number of your id is 10, but in order to ensure consistency ORCID uses the X.

What if I leave Purdue?

Your ORCiD profile goes with you. It is not tied to a particular institution. We do recommend that you include an alternative email address on your profile so that you retain access if you leave Purdue.

I already have a Scopus Author ID/profile, is that the same thing?

It is not the same thing, however, you can import your Scopus author profile, among others, into your ORCID profile by following the steps found on the Scopus Profile page.

Once I've linked my account what will show up automatically?

Only documents with a DOI will be added automatically via CrossRef and Scopus etc. You can add anything that is missing by clicking "add" under works.

Will my account automatically update?

If you have synced your account then new items which have a DOI will be automatically added to your profile

Can I delete items from my profile?

Yes, you just have to click on the "trash icon' next to the item when you're logged into your account.
