Finding and Using E-books

This guide explains how to find and use e-books.

HathiTrust

HathiTrust (pronounced Hah-tee Trust) is a "not-for-profit collaborative of academic and research libraries preserving 17+ million digitized items" (Hathitrust.org). The items available in the HathiTrust catalog have three different classifications:

  • Full Text: Item can be read online and downloaded as a PDF, EPUB, or as a .txt, .zip, .jpg file.
  • Limited (search only): item can only be searched and full text is not available to read online or download. Please search the Purdue Catalog for the item or request it through Interlibrary Loan if not available.
  • Temporary: item can only be read online during the duration of the HathiTrust Emergency Temporary Access Service (ETAS).

You can search the Purdue Libraries Catalog for items or you can search within the HathiTrust website. You will need to login to have access to the materials.

If you click the link titled Full view the book will open up on the next screen.

You can read the item in your browser or download the item on the left side of the screen. You can select which file format to download and how much of the item to download. The PDF file type is recommended because it will work the best across different computer platforms and is accessible to those that have disabilities.
