3D Printing at the Library of Engineering and Science: Home

Library Policy on Use of 3D Printers

Individuals who use the library's 3D printers must comply with Purdue University and Libraries policies.

The library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print/scan request.  Finished objects are subject to review for compliance.

Specifically, the libraries' printers may not be used to create material that is:

○ Prohibited by local, state, or federal law

○ Prohibited by University Policy

○ Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well-being of others

○ Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the library environment

○ In violation of intellectual property rights.

○ For personal use. 3D printers can only be used for educational and research purposes

3D Printing Steps

  1. Find/Make a file
    • Find user submitted designs at sites like Thingiverse or YouMagine.
    • Make your own file using online and university provided tools.
  2. Verify & Review
    • You can use Cura to check print size and weight, as well as detail settings and other options.
    • If the design is flexible, you can allow us to make changes to the design.
  3. Submit
    • Use our online form to submit your design.
    • Include any special instructions in the Notes section. 
  4. Wait & Collect
    • Prints usually completed in under 1 week, depending on volume of requests.
    • You'll receive an email when your print is ready to collect from 2nd floor WALC desk.
