Uncataloged U.S. Government Documents in Purdue Libraries

A significant portion of U.S. Government documents, representing paper, microfiche, CD-ROM, DVD, and various electronic formats are available in Purdue Libraries online catalog. However, the transfer of many of these previously uncataloged documents from Wilmeth Active Learning Center (WALC) predecessor libraries such as the Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, Engineering, and Life Sciences Libraries to HSSE Library means the number of U.S. Government documents in HSSE Library which have not been cataloged has increased significantly.

Many of these uncataloged documents are arranged in Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) number order produced by the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO).  This system classifies documents in a rough alphabetical order based on the agency producing the documents and branches within that agency e.g. U.S. Department of Agriculture A or U.S. Forest Service A 13.

Agencies with uncataloged publications transferred from WALC to HSSE are in microfiche on HSSE Library's 2nd floor and on the 1st floor of the HSSE Library periodical stacks.

Agencies whose uncataloged publications (including their general SuDoc numbers) have been transferred to HSSE include:

  • U.S. Department of Agriculture A
  • National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (SuDoc C 55)
  • U.S. Dept. of Defense (D)
  • U.S. Dept. of Energy (E)
  • U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EP)
  • U.S. Dept. of the Interior (I)
  • National Science Foundation (NS)
  • U.S. Dept. of Transportation (TD)

SuDoc numbers for many of these publications and cataloging information, can be found through the Catalog of Government Publications, which may include links to the complete text of some of these documents.  Full text access to some of these publications may be found through the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC),  U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information, the Environmental Protection Agency's National Service Center for Environmental Publications, the HathiTrust Digital Library, Internet Archive, and the NASA Technical Reports Server.
