Design Basics

7 Principles of Design

  • Emphasis or Hierarchy - In what order is the information going to be taken in?
  • Balance and Alignment - How are the elements organize, are they related?
  • Contrast - What stands out? Also, think about accessibility here.
  • Repetition - Are you establishing an cohesive identity in the elements you've chosen? Are you being consistent?
  • Proportion - How do similar elements in the design relate to one another in terms of their size?
  • Movement - How do the viewer eyes move across the page? Start and end points.
  • White Space - Is there room for the eye to move and the brain to take in information? What can you take away?

These are not hard and fast rules, but key concepts to consider as you go through the design process.
