Knowledge Lab Embroidery Machine

This is a guide for the Bernina B500 Embroidery Machine in the Knowledge Lab.

Getting Started Using the Embroidery Machine

General Things You Need to Know To Get Started:

  • Begin Small
    • Learning to use an embroidery machine takes time. Start with small, simple projects before attempting larger or more complex designs.
  • Choose the Right Fabric

    • Use woven fabrics for your first projects.

      • The Knowledge Lab has a variety of fabric available that's free to use in the sewing area which can be especially useful for practicing.

    • Avoid knit fabrics, stretch materials, or thick fabrics (like terry cloth) until you have more experience—they can be difficult to hoop and stitch evenly.
  • Prepare Your Fabric

    • Pre-wash fabric, especially if embroidering on clothing, to prevent shrinking and puckering after washing. Once embroidery puckers or distorts, it cannot be fixed.
    • Iron the fabric before hooping. Wrinkles can cause poor alignment or stitching errors.
  • Watch Required Tutorials

    • Watch the tutorial video on basic machine use.

    • Review videos on proper hooping and choosing the correct stabilizer for your fabric and design.
  • Start with Built-In Designs
    • Use the pre-programmed designs on the machine before trying to upload or stitch custom designs.
