An overview of WRDS at Purdue

WRDS Wharton Research Data Services

WRDS is a business intelligence, data analytics, and research platform affiliated with the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. 

  • Purdue WRDS access is typically reserved for faculty and graduate students:
    •  Register with your Purdue email address to request a WRDS account.
    • The WRDS account request will be forwarded to a local account administrator for verification.
  • Purdue WRDS access for undergraduates is possible through a Class account created by faculty.
    • Faculty need to email parrlib@purdue.edu to create a Class account.
    • Students ask their faculty for the Class account login information.
    • Do not share this login information outside the course. 

 

Purdue does not subscribe to all WRDS databases due to cost:

  • If you do not see a WRDS database listed when you login, Purdue does not have access to that database.
  • If you see greyed-out text within a WRDS database, Purdue does not have access to that particular dataset.

WRDS databases typically used at Purdue - see the WRDS main page for additional options:

  • Compustat - Capital IQ
    • Company fundamentals.
  • CRSP
    • Stock price and volume information for the NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ markets back to 1925.
  • BoardEx
    • Board member information, committee information, and executive compensation for North American companies.
  • FactSet Ownership
    •  Ownership information for equities and fixed income securities worldwide, mainly sourced from 13F and other filings back to 1999.
  • IBES
    • Analyst company forecasts and buy-sell-hold recommendations.
  • TAQ
    • Intraday transaction data for the NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ markets from 1993-2014.
  • Bank Regulatory
    • Accounting data for bank holding companies and banks.

WRDS offers three types of help:

  • Support - focuses on general support, e.g. technical, account, etc.
  • Classroom - focuses on database contents and includes syllabi for sample assignments, etc.
  • Research - focuses on using WRDS for research, e.g. replicating well-known empirical papers to learn how to do your own research.
