Using EndNote

This guide highlights the unique features of EndNote, both Desktop and Basic,

What is EndNote?

So, what is EndNote? EndNote is a reference management software which will allow you to cite your references in word processing documents to create formatted citations and bibliographies or independent reference lists.

Some of the features of EndNote are:

  • Keep all your references and reference-related materials in a searchable personal library.

  • Synchronize your references between up to three of your personal computers, an online library, and your iPad or iPhone through EndNote Sync. (You must be the owner and user of all three computers.)

  • Set up a library sharing team and effortlessly collaborate with up to 400 co-authors and colleagues.

EndNote Desktop vs EndNote Basic:

Now there are different versions of Endnote available. The two most common are EndNote Desktop and Endnote Basic (online). The main difference between these two versions is that one is free and you have to purchase the other version.

For the free version, which is Endnote Basic (online), you can create an account online. This will allow you to generate a library with a maximum of 50,000 references and up to 2GB of attachments. However, there are also some limitations. For instance, you are limited to using the top 21 most used citation styles only.

On the other hand, while you do have to purchase EndNote Desktop, it does have features that are not included with the free version. For instance, it allows unlimited file attachments and reference storage.

If you are interested in purchasing a copy of Endnote Desktop, please note that Purdue users can purchase this software from Purdue IT at the academic rate.  You can find more information at the link below:
