With the proliferation of AI tools, graduate students often ask themselves how these tools can be ethically used to bolster their research. ChatGPT has gained traction, but its utility is constrained by issues like outdated information, artificial hallucinations, and limited access to scholarly publications hidden behind a paywall. Fortunately, new AI tools have been developed that promote academic exploration and discovery, such as offering generative article summaries, citation chaining, and thematic literature mapping capabilities. This workshop will explore three AI tools—Perplexity, Research Rabbit, and Inciteful—designed to support the research and literature review process. This session will provide a demonstration showcasing their features, ethical usage exemplars, and guidance and strategies for evaluating AI tools for research in the future.

Participants will gain a competitive edge in their job interviews by using business databases to research companies and market contexts. Participants with a research or product idea will learn how to target prospective investors and conduct market research, depending on their unique needs.

After doing your research, you can waste hours getting your citations into the proper format, in the correct order in your paper, and listed in your bibliography. Zotero is a free citation management program that can help you collect, organize, and share your research. This session is designed to help graduate students get started with Zotero. Attendees will learn how to set up Zotero, gather citations, and generate bibliographies.

A literature review requires the writer to extensively gather and analyze scholarship related to their topic, to explain how their work fits into the larger conversation, and to justify their own research project. This session will help you find the most relevant and useful sources to review the literature related to your research question and keep track of what you find.

Scite.ai is a new research tool that uses machine learning to make your literature searching more effective. Scite.ai’s database uses machine learning to determine how citations relate to each other (are they supporting, are they contrasting, etc.) and its AI assistant can answer questions using information from real articles. This workshop will cover what Scite.ai is, how to access Purdue’s subscription, and how to use it effectively and responsibly.

This year's presidential and congressional elections will discuss topics as varied as general economic conditions, the cost of living, energy prices, U.S. foreign assistance, immigration, national security, and multiple other subjects. This presentation will enable users to find and use freely available U.S. Government statistics from federal agencies. Learning about these resources will enable students to become more aware of the legal, factual, and methodological bases of these statistics.
