Dramaturgy

Dramaturgy is the practice of understanding the structure, context, characters, language, and themes of a play. A vital component of the process of production, dramaturgs are the researchers of theater. Without them, plays would simply lack the necessary background information to build depth and character.

According to this article in Dramatics Magazine, dramaturgs are responsible for:

● Analyzing play scripts and librettos
● Performing research about a variety of story elements
● Consulting the playwright on a script’s form and structure
● Supporting the development of a new script, revival, or adaptation
● Advising the director, designers, production team, and actors
● Writing educational or supplementary content for audiences
● Maintaining knowledge of a show’s production history and author(s)
● Consulting outside subject matter experts if the material calls for it
● Considering how the production will connect with today’s audiences

While research is important in all elements of theater, it is vital to the dramaturg. Please use the following tabs to assist you in building the necessary background research for your production.
