When in doubt, use .RIS
All citation managers work on the same basic principal. They use data formatted into fields that can be arranged by recognizing the metadata that tags each section of the citation to arrange and rearrange the fields into the appropriate format for each citation style. The underlying format for most citation managers is RefMan (.ris) and it can be found in the download options for nearly all databases.
