File Structure - What is it and why do we use it?

Hierarchical file structure takes advantage of computer memory to:

  • Minimize access time by getting all of your required data in one trip to the disk

While

  • Maximizing efficient use of disk space by compressing files into the same areas of the hard drive

You can think of a file system as having a path from larger concepts to smaller concepts. It can be drawn as a tree diagram.

Paths in file systems are written from larger concept to smallest concept, separated by forward slash "/" (Unix) or backslash "\" (Windows).

You can design a file structure deliberately based upon the research project that you are completing.
